we need to talk about that scene in '13 reasons why'
13 Reasons Why has been one of the most talked-about shows of the year – it got 3,585,110 tweets in its first week, and has continued to dominate our social media feeds since. The teen drama, based on Jay Asher’s 2007 novel of the same name, starts by killing off its main character. High school student Hannah Baker, 17, takes her own life but leaves behind a box of cassette tapes: 13 recordings (her reasons) which led to that tragic day.
The tapes are delivered to 13 individuals who she blames for her suicide, and we spend each episode hearing what those people did to deserve such an allegation. We watch as Hannah’s death and her posthumous accusations ravage the lives of the people around her – friends, enemies, teachers and parents. Throughout the show, she is raped, bullied, traumatized and ostracized. Then, in the final episode, Hannah ends her life in graphic detail.
